Ever wonder what bees actually do in winter?? π βοΈ
As the temperatures lower and the plants stop flowering, bee activity slows down.
To conserve resources, the male bees (drones) are removed from the hive by the worker bees. The harsh reality of nature! The worker bees then form a cluster around their Queen bee to keep her warm and stay inside π€
There’s no honey being made - and with a smaller population and less energy being spent flying, they can survive on what they made over summer. This is why it’s so important to make sure we leave enough honey for them when harvesting!
For us it means a shift too, fewer hive checks but careful monitoring to ensure they are not being bothered by pests, their home is warm and dry and they have enough resources β
We’re excited to be a part of this brand new event, The Alpine Harvest Festival, where we’ll have a stall for our honey π―
“Celebrate Mother’s Day with a pumpkin themed family day out, surrounded by Autumn colours and Mountain views in Hawea, Central Otago. Bring a picnic to enjoy a day out on the farm!” π

Protecting our bees against wasps π
Did you knowβIn late Summer and heading into the cooler months, wasps can target beehives as an easy food source. With enough pressure, they can weaken a hive to the point where it may collapse π
We keep a close eye on wasp activity around our apiaries and farm. If there’s too many about and they are bothering our hives then we step in, using Wasp traps with lure and/or Vespex to control them. Both options are specifically designed to not be attractive to our bees, and highly effective at controlling wasp populations.
Beekeeping goes beyond the hive - it’s about understanding the wider ecosystem and how everything interacts, so we can support our bees when the balance tips π
A heavy load of honey supers heading off to extraction! π―
Once the bees have finished and sealed the honey with wax, it’s time for us to harvest what they can spare. We take our honey to another local beekeeper to have it extracted.
Each frame is individually uncapped, then the honey is spun out using centrifugal force - a process that doesn’t damage the comb so the bees can use it again next year!
We’re one step closer to bringing you fresh, delicious honey π

Autumn is just starting to show its colours π
We’ve had a busy week on the farm - mustering, weaning our cows and calves, and getting some of the calves ready for sale. It’s been a great season for them, with the help of our bees’ pollination allowing pastures to set seed on the high-country hills. They’re fit and healthy.
Now we’re looking forward to Easter weekend, with the @remarkables_market on Saturday. We hope you are too! π£
A quick heads up to our lovely customers π―
From April 1st, our pricing will be increasing slightly. Over the past couple of years, our operating costs have continued to rise - even before the recent increase in fuel prices & its flow on effects.
Sustainability isn’t just environmental, it’s economical too. To continue caring for our bees, producing the honey you love, and keeping our family business viable for the long term, we need to make these small adjustments.
While this isn’t a change we make lightly, we’re incredibly grateful for your ongoing support π
If you’d like to stock up before April 1st head to our website: https://www.branchcreekhoney.co.nz/shop

Harvest time π―
The honey frames are finished, sealed over with a layer of beeswax, so now they’re ready to harvest!
Firstly we undertake a hive health check, to make sure they are all healthy and that when we take the honey off they’ll still have enough for themselves to see them through winter.
It’s been a hot couple of days in the beesuit but we can’t wait to taste this seasons magic β¨
